ECCLESIASTICAL RECORD

THE APOSTLE JOHN AND EPHESUS

G

BY REV. FRANCIS CLARKE

II THE EXTRACT FROM PAPIAS

(Book II. Oracles of the Lord)

REAT reliance in proof of John's red martyrdom is placed in a citation from Papias, an an ancient Bishop of Hierapolis, who flourished during the first half of the second century. We are also assured that its importance is growing rapidly; which means that the armory of hostile criticism is becoming obsolete, and new weapons of offence must be found. This extract was first discovered in an eleventh-century MS. of the Chronicles of George Harmatolos, a monk who flourished in the ninth. A similar extract was later found in an eighth-century MS. supposed to be an epitome of a voluminous work of Philip of Side, who flourished in the fifth century. According to these two Oriental writers, or else their excerptors, Papias is made to affirm that John was put to death by the Jews; and this would seem to have occurred at the end of the first century in Ephesus. When we come to examine the supposed quotations, we are left quite in the dark as to what were the exact words of Papias. At most they may be reduced to three, and one of these is evidently wrong. George quotes :
