PAUL WALSH, M.A. THE problems presented by the literary materials bearthe name of St. Ignatius of Antioch have given Ting rise to investigation for centuries past, and not a few controversies have been maintained regarding their genuineness and historical setting. Putting aside the New Testament writings themselves, no monuments of the early Church have received so much attention from scholars, from the Renaissance to our own day. The extraordinary interest aroused by the Ignatian letters is due in the main to two factors: (1) The great importance of such an early witness for primitive Church belief and organization; and (2) the peculiarly intricate manner in which the letters have been preserved in the original Greek language, and in the Syriac, Armenian, and Latin versions. The documents were not looked upon with favour by the early Protestants; Calvin, in particular, being especially offensive towards those who employed them in controversy against his system of presbyterian church government. He characterized the letters as nursery stories published under the name of Ignatius, and condemned the insufferable impudence of those who equip themselves with ghosts like these.' Catholic theologians, on the other hand, generally upheld the authenticity of these writings, though some qualified their acceptance by urging that the forms of them in circulation in print in the sixteenth century, and the first half of the seventeenth, were by no means 6 1 Calvin ... calls the Ignatian epistles abominable trash.'—Schaff, History of the Christian Church, ii. 660.
