Excerpt from The Family of Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield

During the first part of the year 1854 the writer began the researches of which the results are contained in this volume, and since that time they have been unremittingly prosecuted, so far as Opportunity has permitted, although the interruptions have been serious. Early in the year 1870 his duties called him to the interior of South America, where he had intended remaining for about three years, but whence he did not permanently return until after the lapse of fifteen.
