The Watery Hades--Tartaros.--Akin to Tiamat, the watery waste, in the Babylonian mythology was Ea, "the Spirit of the Deep,"1 who eventually came to be identified with another divinity, of similar attributes, Mul-lilr the mighty lord of the ghost-world or Hades.2 Ea, the encircling oceanstream, "the water under the earth," was easily confused with the underworld beyond and beneath, to which it was believed to form the entrance.
