LAST year above eight millions of pounds sterling were spent by the people of this kingdom in tobacco—a large sum to end in smoke! If the tobacco had been made into "pigtail," it would have formed a line 99,470 miles long-long enough to go nearly five times round the world. What a large sum of money to be wasted! This would have been enough to have bought a Bible for every poor family in the kingdom. Boys! Never learn to smoke! And let those who do smoke give up this bad habit.-Teachers' Magazine.

FREDERICK AND HIS

PAGE.

FREDERICK THE GREAT, King of Prussia, one day rung his bell, and, nobody answering, he opened his door, and found his page fast asleep in an elbow chair. He advanced towards him, and was going to awaken him, when he perceived part of a letter hanging out of his pocket. His curiosity prompting him to know what it was, he took it out and read it. As he was a very loving and kind-hearted king, let us forgive his doing what even he had no right to do without leave.

It was a letter from this young man's mother, in which she thanked him for having sent her a part of his wages to relieve her misery, and finished with telling him that God would reward him for his dutiful affection.

The king, after reading it, went back softly into his chamber, took a bag full of ducats, and slipped it with the letter into the page's pocket.

Returning to the chamber, he rang the bell so loudly that it awakened the page, who instantly

made his appearance. "You have had a sound sleep," said the king.

The page was at a loss how to excuse himself, and, putting his hand into his pocket, to his utter astonishment, he there found a purse of ducats. He took it out, turned pale, and looking at the king, burst into tears without being able to utter a single word.

"What is the matter?"

Ah, sire," said the young man, throwing himself on his knees, "somebody seeks my ruin; I know nothing of this money which I have just found in my pocket!"

"My young friend," said Frederick, "God often does great things for us even in our sleep; send that to your mother; salute her on my part, and assure her that I will take care of both her and you."

* I think these are the characters intended, but are they not both females? [Yes; this was a mistake of the writer of the enigma, which we overlooked.-ED.]

Uplift the mourner-show that Thou art nigh;
Grant us in all our troubles to decry,
Other relief than in this world can be;
Do Thou from sin and guilt our souls set free,
So that we may on Thee alone rely;

Ever be Thou at hand our path to cheer,
Each time when doubt and fear disturb the mind;
Shed heavenly light upon our pathway here,
That we may see it bright and well defined,
More radiant as each step we onward take,
Eager to sleep and in Thy likeness wake.

Telabib (Ezek. iii. 15).

JEHOSHAPHAT AND SENNACHERIB.

Jairus must be the officer required;
Eunice, mother much to be admired;
Helbon, a Syrian city famed for wine;
Orion brightly in the heavens doth shine;
Seleucia west of Antioch did lie;
Heretic they who Bible truths deny;
Achshaph the city valiant Joshua took;
Phebe a zealous helper in the Lord;

Hadadezer, named in Samuel's second book;
A bishai, who boldly used the sword;
Telabid where Ezekiel spoke God's word.

These are the names whose letters first and last,
Will form Jehoshaphat, of Judah king;

Also Sennacherib, Assyria's head,

Who tried destruction on God's land to bring; The angel of the Lord against him fought,

And boasts and army quickly came to nought;
To his own country forced to turn again,
He shortly was by his own kindred slain.
Jehoshaphat who walked in David's ways,
Was by God prospered both with length of days,
And riches, honour, in abundance given-
In battles, too, help was vouchsafed from heaven.

THE HANDFUL OF MEAL AND THE ROBBERS.

66

ON a dark night in December I started on my ten-mile walk, at ten o'clock, knowing well that, with the exception of one lonely miserable cabin, Í should not see a house for miles. Just as I came to that cabin I heard voices in Irish, not encouraging to a lonely traveller. But God gave me courage. I at once walked in, and surely there were four as fierce-looking fellows as I had ever seen. I told at once my name; asked one or two of them to come with me to the next village; there was a sneer, a scowl; a bundle of straw in the corner began to move, an old woman made herself visible through the thick smoke. 'Little boys," said she to the young giants, "go on your knees, and bless God and this man who saved your lives last summer." The previous summer, through the bounty of English friends, I was able to give a little meal to this woman. I did not know it then, but I soon found out that these were four highway robbers of the worst description, and yet two of these men accompanied me, not to the next village only, but to my own door. I saw them afterwards pass through the town handcuffed, in the custody of the police. "He shall cover thee with His feathers."-An Irish Missionary.

EDITOR'S ADDRESS TO HIS YOUNG FRIENDS.

MY DEAR YOUNG FRIENDS,-Your old friend takes his seat in a pleasant arbour on the side of the lovely Trent, not far from Clifton Grove, the so much-loved haunt of the poet Kirke White. On my left hand, on a black ground, are the following striking and awful words, to mark the everlasting destiny of all who die in their sins :
