and praises have been presented to God by dear Jane in the night: prayer was the very pulse of her soul. The walls of her room were coloured blue, and little white hangings to her bed, with a chair for the visitor, and a little table by her bedside, on which were often placed flowers or fruit. Jane was much respected. One kind friend and another would bring her fruit or flowers. The day on which she exchanged earth for heaven, flowers were on her table. I said, "Jane, you are a fading flower, but you are going to bloom above, where there is no decay, never more to wither." Now she has gone to the Paradise above, to bloom in that celestial soil. Not only has there been wrought in Jane this blessed change, but also in her mother. Since I began to write this she has joined a Christian Church, and I trust, in another daughter, a work of grace is begun. She, too, is now very anxious about her precious soul. Perhaps some of my readers will say, But what about the father?" I fear his heart is not yet changed._I do not see him come to the House of God. has been spoken to very solemnly; but it is the Holy Spirit's work to change the heart. Dear living readers, pray for him and the rest of the family, that they may be converted, and brought to know the Lord, that when they have done with this world they may meet before the throne of God above one unbroken family, to sing the praises of God and the Lamb for ever and ever. Help me to praise God for what He has already done, and say, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy Name. MARY ANN.

"OMNIPOTENT."

Who made the light in one fair day,
And darkness bade, with no delay,
To close the scene so fair and gay?
The Lord on high.

Who made the heavens-that mighty span,
That azure dome spread out for man,
Before a human life began?

The Lord on high.

The seas, and earth, and trees, and flowers,
Who made, I ask, these golden bowers,
Which we do claim as if they're ours?
The Lord on high.

Two glorious lights next let me view:
The stars also-and who made you?
The answer is by no means new-
The Lord on high.

Whose wisdom, power, and skill's displayed-
The fowl, and fish, and all that's made;

And with such proofs of power arrayed?
The Lord on high.

And man, thou work of heavenly art,
Who fashioned thee in every part-
I hear the cry from every heart,
The Lord on high.

Who rested on the seventh day—
And rested then, as we now may,
And did His finished work survey ?
The Lord on high.

NUMBERS.

A YOUTH.

No word of Jehovah was ever in vain,
Unto us poor sinners His mind to explain;
Much gracious instruction in Numbers is given,
Besides a bright view of the "Day Star" from
heaven. (Num. xxiv. 17).

Each gleaner may gather from this blessed book,
Rich gems of instruction wherever they look;
Search the Scriptures, dear gleaners, and there
you shall find,

A fund of rich truth to store in the mind.

BIBLE ENIGMA.

A SON of a noted foe of the Jews;
Who was it the elders' advice did refuse?
Who falsely accused his brother of pride?
What king of his seed an heir was denied?
Who in a deep pit many slain bodies cast?
Who went far on the way, and yet turn'd back at
last?

The land where he dwelt who for patience was
famed,

And one who, ere born, was by God Himself
named?

An impious man, who God's servant did smite,
Who dwelt on a rock by day and by night?
A servant restored to his master again,
A son of a king on the battle-field slain.
Who was born on the day of his parent's sad
death ?

Who pray'd for his foes with his expiring breath?
An altar which once for a witness was raised,
And one who was wroth when his rival was praised.
Solution I request in verse.

Two words my enigma compose.
And may the last become the first,
And weary souls on them repose!

PURE AIR.

WHATEVER renders the blood impure tends to originate consumption. Whatever makes the air impure makes the blood impure. It is the air we

breathe which purifies the blood. And as, if the water we use to wash our clothing is dirty, it is impossible to wash the clothing clean, so if the air we breathe is impure it is impossible for it to abstract the impurities from the blood. What, then, are some of the more prominent things which render the air impure? It is the nature of still water to become impure. It is the nature of still air to become impure. Running water purifies itself. Air in motion, draughts of air, are selfpurifiers. Thus it is that the air of a close room becomes impure inevitably. Thus it is that close rooms bring consumption to countless thousands. Hence all rooms should be so constructed as that they can have a draught of air passing through them. A man of ordinary size renders a hogshead of air unfit for breathing, and consumes its blood-purifying qualities every hour. Hence, sleeping in close rooms, even though alone, or sitting for a very short time in a crowded vehicle, or among a large assembly, is perfectly corrupting to the blood. Close bedrooms make the graves of multitudes.
