unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from Laven" (1 Peter i. 12). I believe he did preach the Gospe rich measure of the unction of that sacred Pentecos ft which gift, with all her decienf, the Holy Ghost, Church. He broke bread with the peop still in the charge, and thus parted with them at the memorial table below, never to meet them again, until he shall meet them at the glory-table above.

[ocr errors]

In the course of the next week he was confined to his bed, and never again left it until his ransomed soul entered the realms of light on high at twenty-minutes to nine on the morning of Tuesday, January the 11th. He was in his 78th year, and in the 53rd year of his ministry at Rochdale. During his last few days his frame appears to have been more one of settled peace and rest in the unchanging covenant love of God in Christ than of ecstatic joy. Two days before his death he exclaimed,

"Yes; I shall soon be landed

On yonder shores of bliss ;
With all my powers expanded,
Shall dwell where Jesus is."

Oh, yes,

The last line he repeated several times. Jesus was his joy in life, his support in death, and is his everlasting song in glory.

Dear young Friends, your time will soon come to enter eternity; long as his life may appear to the young, when he was nearing its close, no doubt, he felt it was a mere vapour. Oh, are you ready to meet God? Are you born again? Is sin your bane, and Christ your balm? Is self your pain and Christ your pleasure? A life of sin

and gracelessness is a journey to hell; a life of faith in, and service of the Lord Jesus is a journey to heaven.

The departed saint cared much for the young; he was a lover of the Sunday School, and va teachers, after year he sought to encoura and to ensure punctualy being present to a minute at the of opening the school, that he nounce a hymn, and invoke the Divine Blessing. Doubtless his prayers have been—and, oh, may they still, in greater and greater measure, be!-answered in showers of blessing upon the teachers and scholars of Hope Sunday School, Rochdale, now that their dear minister "rests from his labours, and his works do follow him." His name, since it is connected with his unctuous proclamation of a precious Christ, is embalmed in the hearts of thousands.

May the Lord of the harvest send forth many such labourers into his harvest!

His body awaits "the first resurrection" in the Rochdale Cemetery, where it is expected a memorial stone will, by his own request, soon tell the passers-by what was indeed the truth about the dear departed one, he was

"A SINNER SAVED BY GRACE."

Few men have more truly than he answered to Bishop Ken's description of

A GOOD MINISTER OF JESUS CHRIST.
"Give me the man these graces shall possess:-
Of an ambassador the just address;

A father's tenderness, a shepherd's care;
A leader's courage, which the cross can bear;
A ruler's awe, a watchman's wakeful eye;
A pilot's skill, the helm in storms to ply;
A fisher's patience, and a labourer's toil;
A guide's dexterity to disembroil;
A prophet's holy unction from above;
A teacher's knowledge, and a SAVIOUR's love."

Dear young friends, I feel I must tell you one thing about John Kershaw. I have seen him weep like a child in remembrance of having pained by disobedience his dear father, who was a godly man, and over the great mercy of God in stopping him and leading him to Christ when quite young, and just as he was entering a path of vice and profanity.

Dear children, you could not go a surer way to plant your dying pillow with thorns than to go contrary to the wishes of godly parents; and, when you come to a dying-bed, you will find nothing can give you true and solid comfort but what gave dear John Kershaw such abundant consolation,—a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus. O may you seek and find this in the days of your youth, is the sincere desire of your willing friend,

THE EDITOR.

BIBLE ENIGMA.

One who made before God a grievous complaint. One who, when sharply tried, his faith did not faint.

One who travelled to preach of tidings the best.
One who through trouble could find no rest.
A prophet who went with encouraging news.
A forefather of that favoured people, the Jews.
A traveller trouble bowed down.

A son of one who wore a crown.

One to whom great promises were made.
A man who in great calamities prayed.
The initials of these will give the name,
Of the father of one of ancient fame.
Fenstanton.
