THIS work consists of six essays, dealing, respectively, with the importance of Scripture study, the meaning of Inspiration, the text of Sacred Scripture, the origin of the Vulgate, the literary form of Scripture, and the evidential value of the Sacred Text. These essays appeared originally in the Catholic World. The Author was well advised in publishing his essays together in book form, for, while the subjects with which they deal are discussed in the various seminarist manuals of Introduction to Scripture, they have not hitherto been made accessible and interesting to the English-speaking Catholic layman. Father Lattey covers a great deal of ground in his essays. Though he omits nowhere anything of importance, his exposition of the various intricate matters discussed is perfectly clear and simple. While he has thus succeeded in putting his stores of knowledge at the service of the intelligent, but theologically untrained, reader, his work will also be found very sug gestive and helpful by both students and teachers of Scripture. His chapters on Inspiration and the Vulgate are particularly good, and contain many points which may be new even to experienced workers in Scripture. Taurini-Romae: Ex Officina Petri Marietti. A SPECIAL chapter of the Code is devoted to Parishes and Parish Priests. Its compass, however, is very brief, including only Canons 451-470, and manifestly is incapable of containing all the legislation on this subject. There are many points relating to parishes and parish priests which have also more intimate connexion with other matters, and which consequently are relegated much more appropriately to other parts of the Code. Thus, a parish, being usually a benefice, has many features in common with other benefices, and hence, as one naturally expects, the chapter on this latter subject is to a large extent applicable to parishes also in fact, it regulates almost entirely their erection, union, division, and dismembration. The procedure for the administrative removal of parish priests is outlined most appropriately, not in the special chapter referred to, but in connexion with the general legislation on Extrajudicial Processes in the fourth book. Many of a pastor's most important rights and obligations have reference to the Sacraments; and it is in the canons : 1 the Sacraments that, as a rule, they are to be found. These are but few examples to show how widespread is this subject of parishes and arish priests, and how inadequate an acquaintance with it one can quire if one merely studies Canons 451-470. The present volume brings together from the various parts of the ode all the canons which have a bearing, no matter how remote, upon This subject; and for this reason alone, even though there were no other commend it, it must prove a great help to those who have a theoetical or practical interest in the administration of a parish and in the ghts and duties of its pastor. For the priest on the mission, who is imself already engaged in parochial work, it will be especially useful. 'o him are wanting time and opportunity, as a rule, and, not infreuently, inclination also, for a very close study of Canon Law. What boon it will be for him then to get all the legislation dealing with his vork brought together and arranged in an ordered sequence! Moreover, his volume is not confined to parish priests merely, it deals also with Darochial vicars, so that it forms a complete handbook for all who are ngaged in the care of souls, whether it be in a principal or a subordinate position. The fact that the work under review brings together all the canons of the Code connected with its subject matter is not by any means its only claim for commendation: its historical notes and its commentary nust also prove very useful. It is true, indeed, that the consideration given to the historical aspect of the question is rather on the brief side; but what there is of it is very much to the point. Many, too, we are sure, will be inclined to regard brevity in this department as a merit rather than a defect. The commentary, on the other hand, is very full. Most of the obscurities and difficulties which present themselves receive the author's attention, and his explanations are always clear, and in many cases of high value. By way of illustration we need only refer to his comments on the term 'parish priest,' in which he discusses at much length the extension of the third class, who come under this designation in the Code-Vicarii paroeciales, si plena potestate paroeciali sint praediti. He has incorporated, too, all the interpretations of the Code Commission $ and most of the decisions of Congregations and Tribunals connected with this subject, so that the work is throughly up to date.
