EASTER-SUNDAY.

HE Festival

INSTRUCTION.

of EASTER is the greatest and the most august of all the Festivals of the Christian religion, as the PASSOVER of the Jews was the greatest of their solemnities. That Festival among them was instituted in memory of the passage of the angel, when he destroyed the first-born of the Egyptians, and spared those of the Hebrews. Among the Christians, EASTER is kept in memory of the Resurrection of Christ, the third day after his death. Altho' God made all times and days, and there is none but what subsist by his order and for his glory, the Church says of the Feast of the Resurrection; This is the day the Lord hath made; and repeats these words in every part of the Divine Office. And indeed this is the day, by way of eminence, the day of the Lord. All the days of the mortal life of Jesus Christ, which preceded his Resurrection, were, according to St. Paul, the days of his humanity, that is, days of humiliation; whereas this is properly the day of his glory. For it was by his Resurrection that the maxims of his

Gospel were authorized, his other miracles confirmed, his mission proved, and all his labours crowned. In a word, the whole of religion, together with the truths it teaches, is grounded on the Resurrection of Christ. And this is the occasion of the joy the Church testifies this day.

We have a right to partake of this joy, if we be spiritually risen again with Christ; that is to say, if we have renounced sin, and our thoughts and desires be directed to heaven. But if we still grovel under the weight of sin, if our fears, hopes, desires, hate or love, be confined to the goods or evils of this life, we remain in death, and are not risen again with Christ; so that we can have no share in the joy of the Church for the Resurrection of Christ.
