OFFERT. Psalm xvii.

Thou wilt save the people, that is humble, O Lord, and thou wilt humble the eyes of the proud ones: for who is God besides thee, O Lord.

RETHREN : Let us not be desirous

of evil things,

as they were. Neither become ye idolaters, like some of them: as it is written: The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them did; and for it three and twenty thousand fell in one day. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them tempted him, and were destroyed by serpents. Neither murmer ye, as some of them murmured, and fell by the destroyer. Now all these things happened to them in figure; and they were wrote for our instruction, on whom the end of the world is come. Wherefore let him, who thinketh that he standeth, take heed lest he fall. Let no temptation seize you, but such as is human; for God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above your strength, but will even make you improve by the temptation, that you may be able to persevere.

A holding the city, he wept over it, saying: O if

thou didst but know, and even in this thy day, the things that are for thy peace! but now they are hidden from thy eyes. For the days will come upon thee, when thy enemies shall cast up a trench round about thee, and encompass thee, and straiten thee on every side; and they shall beat thee down to the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou hast not known the time of thy visitation. And going into the temple, he began to cast out those that bought and sold in it; saying to them; it is written; My house is a house of prayer; but you have made it a den of thieves. And he taught daily in the temple. CREDO.

OFFERT. Psalm xviii. The ordinances of the Lord are right, and gladden the heart; and his precepts are sweeter than honey, and the honey-comb; and therefore doth thy servant observe them.

Justitiæ Domini recta lætificantes corda; et judicia ejus dulciora super mel et favum; nam et servus tuus custodit ea.

SECRET. Grant us, O Lord, we beseech thee, worthily to celebrate often these mysteries; for as many times as this commemorative sacrifice is celebrated, so often is the work of our redemption performed. EPISTLE. 1 Cor. xii. 2. 11.

RETHREN: You know, when you were heathens, you went after dumb idols, even as you were led. Therefore I declare to you, that no man speaking by the spirit of God, saith Anathema to Jesus. And no one can say; Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Spirit. Now there are diversities of graces, but the same spirit; and diversities of ministries, but the same Lord: and diversities of functions; but it is the same God that worketh all in all. And the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every one for the general profit. To one indeed is given

by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gift of healing by the same Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another the discerning of spirits; to another diversity of tongues; to another the interpreting of speeches. Now one and the same Spirit performeth all these things, distributing to every one, as he pleaseth.

GOSPEL. Luke xviii. 9. 14.

T that time: Jesus spoke this parable to certain men, who confided in themselves as righteous, and despised others. Two men went up to the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, the other a Publican. The Pharisee standing, prayed thus within himself: O God, I give thee thanks, that I am not like other men, who are extortioners, unjust, adulterers; or even like this Publican. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all I have. And the Publican standing afar off, would not so much as lift up his eyes towards heaven; but struck his breast, saying: God be merciful to me a sinner. I say to you: This man returned home justified more than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted. CREDO.

OFFERT. Ps. xxiv. Ad te, Domine, levavi

To thee, O Lord, have I raised up my soul; my God, I put my trust in thee, let me not be put to shame: neither let my enemies scoff at me; for none that rely on thee, shall ever be confounded.

animam meam; Deus meus, in te confido, non erubescam; neque irrideant me inimici mei; etenim universi qui te expectant, non confundentur.
