A GOSPEL. Matt. xvi. 13. 19. T that time: Jesus came into the quarters of Casarea Philippi; and he asked his disciples saying: Whom do men say that the Son Man is? But they said: Some John the Baptist, and others some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the Prophets. Jesus saith to them; But whom do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered and said; Thou art Christ the Son of the living God. And Jesus answering, said to him; Blessed art thou Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven. And I say to thee; That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven. CREDO. XIII. St. HERMENEGILDUS, Martyr. For which of you having a mind to build a tower, doth not first sit down and reckon the charges that are necessary, whether he have wherewithal to finish it. Lest after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that see it begin to mock him, saying; This man began to build, and was not able to finish. Or what king, about to go and make war against another king, doth not first sit down and think, whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him, that with twenty thousand cometh against him. Or else, whilst the other is yet afar off, sending an embasy, he desireth conditions of peace. So likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be my disciple. N those days: I John, heard, as it were, the voices of many multitudes in heaven, saying; Alleluia : Salvation, and glory and honor belongeth to our God; for true and just are his judgments, who hath judged the great harlot, who corrupted the earth with her fornication, and hath revenged the blood of his servants at her hands. And again they said: Alleluia. And her smoke ascended for ever. And the four-and-twenty Elders, and the four living creatures fell down, and adored God, who sitteth upon the throne, saying: Amen: Alleluia. Thro'. XXV. St MARK the Evangelist. Double of the 2d Cl. S INSTRUCTION. T. Gregory the Great was the author of the Procession that is made this day. A terrible plague breaking out at Rome about the year 589, which carried off numbers of people, and among the rest Pope Pelagius, St. Gregory, who succeeded him, appointed public prayers for averting the wrath of God. The happy effects of these prayers, which appeared in the ceasing of the plague, was the occasion of thrat pious custom being continued ever since, in order to turn away the wrath of God, which we have too much reason to apprehend is incensed against us on account of our repeated sins and transgressions. Let us therefore on this day humble ourselves in prayer and abstinence before Almighty God, that he may keep from us all pestilential distempers, forgive us our sins, and give a blessing to the fruits of the earth. And, for this end, if we cannot assist at the public service, let us say the Litany at least in our own family. VESPERS. As of APOSTLES, p. i. PRAYER. Collect at Mass, At the PROCESSION. HE resemblance of the faces of the four living creatures was this; the face of a man, and the face of a lion was on the right hand, of these four: and the face of an ox on the left of these four, and above these four the face of an eagle. Their faces and their wings were stretched upwards: two wings of each one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies: and they went every one straight forward: where the force of the spirit was, thither they went, neither turned they back, when they walked. As for the likeness of the living creatures, their looks were like burning coals of fire, and as the appearance of flaming lamps. This was the vision that ran up and down in the midst of the living creatures, a flaming fire, and out of the fire a brightness darting forth; and the living creatures went and returned like a flash of lightning.
