THE

HE righteous shall stand up with great constancy against those that afflicted them, and took away their labourst. The wicked seeing this shall be seized with dreadful fear, and shall be amazed at the suddenness of their unexpected salvation, saying within themselves, repenting and groaning thro' anguish of spirit; these are they whom we held for some time in derision, and for a by-word of reproach. Fools, as we were, we esteemed their life madness, and their end without honour. Behold, how they are numbered among the children of God, and their lot is among the Saints.

Or EPISTLE. Tim. ii. 8, 11; iii. 10, 12. EARLY beloved; Be mindful that the Lord Jesus Christ is risen again from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my gospel. Wherein I labour even unto bands, as an evil doer; but the word of God is not bound. Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation, which is in Christ Jesus, with heavenly glory.-(Chap. iii.) But thou hast fully made known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, long-suffering, love, patience, persecutions, afflictions; such as came upon me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra; what persecutions, I endured, and out of them the Lord delivered me. And all that will live godly in Christ Jesus, shall suffer persecution.

GOSPEL. John xv. 1, 7.

T that time; Jesus said to his disciples: I am the true vine; and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me, that beareth not fruit, he will take away; and every one that beareth fruit he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now you are clean by reason of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me; and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you the branches; he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit; for without me you can do nothing. If any one abide not in me; he shall be cast forth as a branch, and shall wither, and they shall gather him up, and cast him into the fire, and he burneth. If you abide in me, and my word abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will, and it shall be done unto you. OFFERTORY. Psalm lxxxviii.

The heavens shall acknowledge thy wonders, O Lord, and thy truth in the assembly of the saints, Alleluia, Alleluia.

EPISTLE. 1 Peter i. 3, 7.

LESSED be the God and Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy hath regenerated us unto a lively hope, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, unto an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that cannot fade, reserved in heaven for you, who by the power of God are kept by faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Wherein you shall greatly rejoice, if now you must be for a little time made sorrowful in divers temptations: that the trial of your faith (much more precious than gold which is tried by the fire) may be found unto praise, and glory, and honor at the appearing of Jesus Christ.
