WHO IS THIS?

'Tis the reader the GLEANER is anxiously seeking, The reader who prayerfully reads,

Is this page to such readers now earnestly speaking, Who're feeling their various needs.

'Tis the reader that pauses to prayerfully ponder O'er truths that agree with the Word,

Who feels that wherever her footsteps may wander, She's under the eye of the Lord.

'Tis the reader that hungers and thirsts for the Saviour,

And longs upon earth to possess

That highest of mercies, that heavenly favour,
A conscience through Jesus at peace.

Are

you that young reader who Jesus is seeking? We bid you the Truth still to read:

"Seek on and you'll find;" 'tis Truth who is speaking; He'll give you the blessing you need.-ED.

THE TEACHING OF ROMANISM.

A CORRESPONDENT of the Journal and Messenger, in a criticism of Dr. Hodge, gives some facts of interest concerning this great apostasy :

"There is none other name given under heaven whereby we may be saved but the name of Jesus.' Rome does not teach this vital truth. Let me say that I go to Rome herself for her doctrines, to her books, in their original language, whatsoever it may be. As to our own merits,' says the Council of Trent (Sess. 6, Cap. 10, Can. 25), 'a man by good works is justified. Men are justified by good works appointed by the Church. As to our one Mediator,

Own

the Litany of Loretto calls Mary the 'Ark of the Covenant and Refuge of Sinners;' and St. Amadeo says that 'she continually stands before the face of God, interceding for us.' 'The Church of Rome,' says the Doctor, 'proclaims the divine authority of Scripture.' Per contra, she says, 'The word of God derives all its authority from the Pope' (Tetzel, Ekias et Prierias). The reading Scripture without the traditions of the Church makes the gospel of Jesus Christ the gospel of the devil' (Arnend, Defense de Ver., p. 63). "Without the tradition of the Church, I would value Matthew no more than Livy' (Brille S. S. Bellarmine de verb.; Dei non Script, Lib. I. Cap. 4). As to morality, Rome teaches (Martinet Rel. in Soc., cap. 56, 57) that Mary is ever to be worshipped. 'Images are to be reverenced and worshipped' (Council of Trent, Sess. 25). 'Religious worship is due to God and the saints' (Bellarmine De Sanctor, Book I. Cap. 12). 'To swear out of lightness or vanity is innocent' (Bonacien Tom. 2). To disobey parents is a venial error' (See Sylvestre, Graffis and Sotus). To kill a heretic is nothing' (De Graffis, l. c. xi., n. xii.). 'Civil contracts, oaths, promises, or agreements with heretics are to be broken' (Canon 14). "It is lawful to steal in necessity' (Sessions on Justice, Book II. Chap. 12; also many others). 'Calumny, though grounded on absolute falsities, is not a mortal sin, either against justice or charity' (Dicastillo, De Justitia Desprit 12, num. 404).”

Here, young reader, here are some of the awful errors that Ritualism is letting in upon us, and that public funds have been so abundantly drawn upon to support. Dear young friends, may Popery, and all the choral shows, cross decorations, ecclesiastical processions, and all that leads to it, be the subject of your supreme contempt, and be things

that

you will ever fly from. Cling to the Book of God unabridged, unsupplemented, and the ordinances of God unadorned by human inventions.-ED.

BIBLE ENIGMA.

WHAT is it that shall blossom as the rose?
One whose prince with Deborah was.

A place that shall rejoice in God's dear name.
Who with a letter to the Lord once came?
A deliverer God in Israel raised.

A king who once in Judah reigned.
A partner and helper with St. Paul.

One who was humbled, and on God did call.
A place where palm-trees did abound.

Who is it shall be weary and shall faint be found?
A stone which once a prophet raised.
The place where altars too were raised.
One whose strength was as his day.
To David who a solemn truth did say?
A mother who in Israel rose.

One who to Paul a faithful brother was.

A ruler of the Jews that came to the Son of God.
One who of old, 'tis said, he greatly feared the Lord.
One who in youth the holy Scriptures knew.
One who was saved with Noah, favoured few.
He who in age was by his son deceived.
A mother to whom one did cleave.
That if to you the Lord does give,
You will for ever with Him live.

WHO IS THIS?

THIS is the girl we don't approve,
For learning tasks she has no love,
She wanders here and there;
She idly looks on every hand,
But nothing does she understand,
For knowledge has no care.

Still such a girl as this we seek,
And have a word to her to speak :
Come, idle child, amend.

Come, read our pages o'er and o'er,
Your want of love to books deplore-
The GLEANER is your friend.
