TIBERIAS is a small town situated above the midd le of the western bank of the lake of Gennesaret; it was chiefly built by Herod the Tetrarch, who was in favour with the Emperor Tiberias. The inhabitants derived their support mostly from the navigation of the Sea of Galilee, and from its fisheries. After the destruction of Jerusalem, Tiberias was celebrated during several centuries for its Rabbinical Academy. The picture opposite is a view of the ruins of this once famous city, which commands views of various sites memorable in Scripture. On the west may be seen the city of Mary Magdalene; Capernaum, Chorazin, and Bethsaida once lay on the same coast; on the east was the scene of the great miracle, the feeding of five thousand. while gazing on that lovely inland sea, the sea of Galilee, that that spiritual man of God, McCheyne, wrote the following sweet lines: THE SEA OF GALILEE.
