Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I fpeak unto you, I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the II works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' 12 fake. Verily, verily I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do, shall he do also, and greater works than these shall (d) he do; because I go 13 unto my Father. And whatsoever (e) ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be 14 glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. $5 If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I 16 will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter (f), that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it feeth him not, neither knoweth (c) Believing in my doctrine, imitating my example, and obeying my commands, is the true and only way to everlasting happiness. Yet a little while, and the world feeth me no more: but ye see me: because I 20 live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know, that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will 22 manifeft myself to him. Judas (6) faith unto him (not Iscariot) Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifeft thy23 felf unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and faid unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24 He that loveth me not, keepeth not my fayings; and the word which you hear, is not mine, but the Fa 25 ther's which fent me. These things have I spoken 26 unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the holy Ghost, whom the Father will fend in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatso27 ever I have faid unto you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, 28 neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I faid unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I (i). 29 And now I have told you before it come to pafs, that (g) The comforter, because an invisible spirit, was not attended to by the world: but the true disciples of Christ will cherish and encourage that blessed Spirit, as the author and source of every thing that is good. Hereafter I will not talk much with you (k): for the prince of 31 this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arife, let us go hence (1). 2 CHAP. XV. I AM the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he taketh away and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it (a), that it may bring forth more 3 fruit. Now ye are clean (6) through the word which 4 I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you (c). As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine: no more can ye, except 5 ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do no6 thing (d). If a man abide not in me, he is caft forth as a branch (e), and is withered; and men gather them, 7 and caft them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much (A) I shall not long have an opportunity of instructing you, the powers of the world being now at work to destroy me; and though guilty of no fin myself, I am ready to lay down my life for the fins of the world, that I may fulfil the will of my Father. t (1) Let us arife from table, and go away. (a) He dreffeth and pruneth it, that it may be fit for bearing. (6) Thus are you carefully and tenderly dressed, and made clean by my word. (c) Take care to remain united to me as branches are to their flock; and I will nourish and invigorate you by my fpirit. (d) Broken off and separate from me, you can do nothing. (e) As a branch cut off, 9 fruit 9 fruit; so shall ye be my difciples (f). As the Father hath loved me, fo have I loved you: continue ye in 10 my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love (g): even as I have kept my FaII ther's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might 12 remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment (b), That ye love one another, 13 as I have loved vou. Greater love hath no man than 14 this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 15 Henceforth I call you not fervants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends (i); for all things that I have heard of 16 my Father, I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chofen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain (k): that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it 17 you. These things I command you, that ye love 18 one another. If the world hate you, ye know that it 19 hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out 20 of the world, therefore the world hateth you (1). Remember the word that I faid unto you, The servant (f) It is only by being fruitful in good works, that you can be truly my disciples. (g) You will continue to be beloved by me, as I am for my obe-dience beloved by my Father. (h) This is my principal diftinguishing commandment. Chap. xiii. 34. (i) I have treated you in the most friendly and affectionate manner, instructing you most plainly in all things necessary for your fal vation. (k) That the effect of your labours, in converting multitudes to the faith in Christ, may remain to the end of the world. (1) If ye were like the rest of the world, you would escape all the perfecution you must now expect for preaching against their vices. If is not greater than the lord (m). If they have perfecuted me, they will also perfecute you: if they have 21 kept my faying, they will keep your's also. But all these things will they do unto you for my name's 22 fake, because they know not him that sent me. I had not come, and spoken unto them, they had not had fin (n): but now they have no cloke for their 23 fin. He that hateth me, hateth my Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had fin: but now have they both seen, and hated both me and my Father. 25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in the law, They hated me with26 out a cause. But when the Comforter is come, whom I will fend unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he 27 shall testify of me (o). And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning (p). 2 THESE things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended (a). They shall put you out of the synagogues (6): yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you, will think that he doeth 3 God service. And these things will they do unto (m) See Chap. xiii. 16.
