Divers circumstances prompted me to write the following historical survey of the important questions of divorce and certain forbidden de grees in marriage From time to time I have been called upon to lecture or speak in public upon both of these, and I could not but be sur prised to find from the discussions, which have generally taken place, that my brethren of the Clergy have too often seemed to form very decided opinions upon wholly insufficient evi dence. Not infrequently they have appeared to be satisfied with the support of some single name of distinction, altogether forgetting that Bishops and Doctors, who rightly command respect for.
